How Crosser enables Smart Energy Monitoring (and actions)

The current energy crisis is putting a lot of pressure on global industries. There is an eminent need of monitoring, getting control of, and reducing the energy consumption within all industrial verticals. And for the more energy-intensive verticals, this has become an existential problem that needs to be resolved very quickly.

For instance has the German company Hackle, a leading toilet paper manufacturer, filed for bankruptcy and said in a statement:

“Since the start of the Corona pandemic in 2020, the energy-intensive paper industry has been subject to severe distortions in the global raw materials, logistics and energy market”.

Over the years, many great ideas and solutions to reduce the impact of the energy crisis have been presented. Creating smart solutions from the grid to the very last endpoint of the energy network.

For example, studies from the Nordics [Digitalization for Energy Efficiency in intensive Industries, KTH Industrial Enineering and Management], indicates that digitalisation can help industries get control over their energy consumption. And together with the utility companies they can create what's called demand based energy supply etc.

Another example is the manufacturing site, buildings can account for a significant share of the overall energy consumption of industrial facilities. Therefore, efficient building management can have a great impact on the overall energy efficiency of any industrial facility.

But the adoption of digital technologies for monitoring and controlling energy consumption is still at an early stage in the manufacturing and process industries and their full potential for improved energy management have not been realized yet.

One of the problems is that most of these solutions are slow to implement. The technology is there, but the information (data) needed for controlling these systems are not available yet.

Improve Energy Efficiency with Digitisation and IoT

The International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights how enhanced data analytics from sensors, meters and various interfaces can trigger automations and control to optimize energy consumption.

Crosser Improve Efficiency and Smart Energy

International studies have identified six sets of benefits from connected machines and assets based on evidence from industries that have already adopted digital technologies for the monitoring of energy consumption.

Those benefits include:

  • finding and reducing energy waste sources
  • improving energy-aware production scheduling
  • reducing energy costs
  • enhancing efficient maintenance management
  • improving environmental reputation
  • supporting decentralization in decision-making at production level to increase energy efficiency

Why is this a problem?

The statements mentioned above are nothing new. Industries have had energy efficiency on their road map since ages. But why haven't they started to implement these solutions already?

The answer is complexity. Implementing a full scale Energy Management System (EMS) is very complex, time consuming and expensive. Implementing incremental energy management projects is often considered complex and with unclear ROI.

The Intelligent Edge - the fast lane to energy optimization for Industry 4.0

This is where emerging technologies like Crosser come into play. Designed to radically change the way industries work with their data. Drastically lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for IoT and integration projects of all kinds. Simplifying every step of the digitisation process.

Referring to the International Energy Agency (IEA) process of enhanced energy efficiency, Crosser provides most of the needed functionality - creating an Intelligent approach to the energy data integration:

Data Gathering

Crosser has pre-built connectors, and the ability to connect to more than 800 industrial protocols and systems. Enabling a very quick implementation of all asset or energy data needed for your optimization and efficiency project.

Data Analysis

The extensive library of pre-built modules within the Crosser Platform, contains more than 100 analytics modules for simplifying data transformation, normalization, filtering and real-time analytics. It also contains modules for enabling Machine Learning and AI models to analyze the streaming asset data.

Actions

One of Crosser’s core functionalities is the leading performance of processing streaming data, and to take actions and trigger events based on the data. Crosser empowers companies to trigger systems on the factory floor, or to trigger adjustments in machines in the processing line. Crosser is also used for triggering updates in databases and cloud services for enhanced data analytics.

The Crosser low code functionality and intuitive control cloud radically simplifies all three steps in the International Energy Agency (IEA) model. This creates realistic conditions for addressing the emerging energy crisis in time, and at a reasonable cost.
